ASFINAG Challenge: AV2X

AUDIO MOBIL scored highly at the ASFINAG Challenge. With our solution for reducing noise on the highways, we presented the concept "Acoustic networking of highway users to infrastructure (AV2X)". With this technology, we are now one of the three most innovative entries.

Acoustic networking of highway users to infrastructure (AV2X)

Traffic noise on highways and expressways is caused by different road users such as buses, trucks, motorcycles and cars. A noise load reduction must take different aspects into account, such as the fact that a truck produces about 10 times as much "noise" as a passenger car.

When applying an actively operated noise protection measure, it makes sense to network the noise generator - i.e. the respective vehicle - with the corresponding infrastructure (V2X) in order to have specific, local real-time data on the type and characteristics of the traffic available in addition to the information recorded directly by sensors. As vehicle networking is an important business area for vehicle manufacturers for several reasons, such as fleet management, intelligent navigation or highly automated driving, an exchange with the vehicle manufacturers must take place here. Anonymized real-time traffic data is already being made available today to increase road safety. In the context of active noise reduction, it is necessary to evaluate which basic data could be made available by the vehicle, which pre-processing of this basic data with regard to an acoustic signature would be possible within the vehicle and which technologies or network structures (multi-access edge computing, 5G, etc.) could be used to transmit the data to the noise protection device with the lowest possible latency.

In the future, this "acoustic signature" could be standardized for different vehicle classes (cars, trucks, buses, etc.) through corresponding legal requirements and become part of the general operating permit in the context of freeway and expressway use. A further advantage results from the event-controlled activation of the active noise control system, which means that the most suitable ANC technology (actuators, transducers, etc.) can be used depending on the application and environmental conditions. Energy-optimized ANC software can also be used effectively with this event-based approach. AUDIO MOBIL contributes over 30 years of expertise in the field of vehicle acoustics, connectivity and coordination of industrial and political interests.

Added value

The combination of several technological approaches creates the basis for a holistic implementation concept for "reducing acoustic pollution". In addition to the unique position in the European and probably also global environment of road operators, standardizable specifications can be developed for the automotive industry. AV2X makes it possible to distribute the costs of future noise protection measures among the stakeholders of vehicle manufacturers, infrastructure operators and residential complex builders and owners in an economically justifiable manner.
